Tips For Choosing Better Foods At A Grocery Store

By Ida Long

Grocery shopping may not be fun, but we all have to do it. Choosing the right foods can be very difficult given all of the tempting treats we see while we are in the store. The average shopper makes several decisions in each aisle of the supermarket, adding to the stress of shopping, which leads to most people buying unhealthy foods to comfort themselves. To keep you on track in the grocery store and out of the cookies aisle, here are a few helpful tips to try.

Don't shop on an empty stomach. This is the number one reason most people buy junk food and stray from their list. When you are hungry, your body's instinct tells you to find fattening food fast. Now that we have developed past the foraging stage, we need to suppress that urge, knowing that the fattening foods we find now are not nearly as healthy as the food our instincts are calling for. Instead, fill your body with healthy food before you go grocery shopping to keep it from getting desperate.

Avoid buying canned food that has been packed in oil or sugar syrup. Instead, try to buy canned foods packed in water.

Check your food labels. If you see the word "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated", don't buy it. These words mean that your food contains trans fats, which is becoming illegal it is so unhealthy.

If you, like many Americans nowadays, are avoiding dairy products, make sure that you get enough calcium in your diet by buying calcium fortified orange juice or take a calcium supplement. Dark leafy greens are naturally high in calcium and are usually inexpensive, making them a great source of calcium as well.

Looking for a food that will provide you will lots of vitamin c, beta carotene with minimal calories? Look no further because cantaloupe offers all of these things. Just make sure that you don't combine your melon with any other food to avoid gas.

Following these simple tips you will be able to follow your grocery list more closely and eat healthier as a result. Luckily, there are many tasty healthy foods available in most grocery stores. All you have to do is get past the junk food temptations.
