Four Tips for Choosing a Gym

By Carrie Pepper

When you're looking for the right gym to join, there are a few things to consider. Do you not like the idea of being in a "meat market" atmosphere? Perhaps you just don't want to drive a long distance to workout. There are many different reasons people join a gym, and there are as many reasons that they slack off and stop going. Do your homework first and save yourself the time and hassle.

One of the most important things in joining a gym is just how far you will have to go to get there. Think of how far you are willing to drive; take traffic into account, and then map out the facilities that are within your desired driving distance. The location is one of the most important factors in keeping your workouts consistent.

What are your primary reasons for joining a gym? If you want to take yoga, spin or aerobic classes, put this on your list. Do you want a co-ed gym or a (ladies, this is for you) woman's only facility? Write down the things that are the most important to your fitness goals. Whatever is the most important, write it down and then you'll find the gym that's just right for you.

You need to make a list. Decide what you want (toning, muscle building, training for an event, socializing). Make a list of the facilities that fit into these areas. Then, go out and visit each location; get a guest pass, really get the feel of the place. It is one thing to take a tour of a gym, and it's a totally different thing to physically work out there. I got a guest pass at a very popular 24 hour type facility recently to see if it would be a fit for me. After 20 minutes of waiting for a treadmill, smelling sweat and watching a parade of muscle-bound men walk past me on the way to the free weight area; I checked them off my list immediately.

If finances are a factor, take a look around at the end of the year, or right after New Years. It's proven that the majority of people join gyms to make their new year's resolutions; and the majority quit a few weeks later; but, you can get one heck of a great deal at this time of the year. So, take advantage of the lower prices and be one of those who will stick with it.
