How Adidas Started

By Scarlett Doherty

As the largest manufacturer or sportswear in Europe and the second largest manufacturer of sportswear in the world, the Adidas brand can often be found on any major shopping strip or shopping centre.

The sporting empire came from quite humble beginnings and a young man called Adolf Dassler (Adi-Das) who began designing shoes from a very young age. Adolf and his brother Rudolph created the brand after returning from the First World War in 1924. Their initial designs and creations were completed in their mother's wash kitchen. These creations developed into "Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory" and it became an imminent success.

The company's first big break came during the 1936 Summer Olympics when he persuaded American athlete Jesse Owens to wear his studded shoes during his races. Owens went on to win four gold medals and simultaneously through the Adidas brand into the spotlight. The business then went on to sell up to 200,000 pairs of shoes per year for the next three years.

When both brothers returned from World War II the rising tensions between them came to a head and they split. Rudolph left the brand to form his own shoe company which would later become known as Puma. The Adidas brand continued its growth even without Rudolph. The World Cup of 1954 would launch the Adidas brand on a global scale mainly thanks to the friendship of Adolf and the current German coach Sepp Herberger.

Adolf's friendship with the current German coach Sepp Herberger led to the German soccer team wearing pairs of specially designed studded Adidas boots in their World Cup final against Hungary. As the Hungarian team were sliding around in the mud, the Germans with their studded boots had extra grip which helped towards their eventual victory. The German win wearing the Adidas boots propelled the brand out onto the worldwide scale.

Today Adidas is one of the world's foremost manufacturers of football boots. The brand has also branched out to include sportswear, accessories and equipment. The Adidas brand is a popular choice with sporting stars including Alicia Molik and Andy Murray.
